The Morocco Desert Challenge is one of Africa’s largest and most iconic cross-country rally-raid events, running annually since 2008. It is not a horse-racing event but rather a motorized desert rally, featuring motorbikes, cars, buggies, trucks, and other off-road vehicles. Each year, over 1,000 participants compete across eight tough, consecutive days of racing, covering nearly the entire width of Morocco—from the Sahara Desert to the Mediterranean coast.
The Morocco Desert Challenge was originally called the Libya Rally because the event first took place in Libya, starting in 2008, and the stunning Libyan desert served as its rally playground. The name changed after the rally was moved to Morocco due to political instability in Libya, making Morocco the new and permanent host country for the event.
Key Features
-
The rally is famous for its “coast to coast” route, zero liaison concept (meaning all distance is competitive), varied terrains including dunes, rocky pistes, and dry lake beds, and demanding navigation.
-
It is accessible to both seasoned racers and amateur adventurers, as it is not part of the FIA/FIM World Rally-Raid Championship and so does not require official licenses, only a valid medical certificate.
-
Safety and camaraderie are key values with a strong focus on team spirit and a supportive rally community, giving it a unique open, friendly atmosphere.
Atmosphere and Prestige
Participants experience authentic rally conditions with minimal outside support, spectacular bivouacs in the wild, and a true spirit of adventure and competition. The event is known for its challenging stages, sense of camaraderie, and continuous growth in scale and reputation, making it the fastest-growing rally-raid of its kind in the world.
In essence, the Morocco Desert Challenge is Morocco’s flagship off-road rally: a week-long test of endurance, navigation, and teamwork across the wild, beautiful desert—an event for high adventure and motorsport enthusiasts alike.
